Air Dry Clay and Model Magic Sculpture Projects

Summer is SO MUCH FUN! It’s a time for vacations, relaxing, creating and CAMPS! This summer I taught a 4-Day Sculpture Camp at my school that was a blast! The awesome thing was that my daughter Kayleigh joined with me in teaching the camp! She is in college right now as a Deaf Education major. So having some teaching experience for her is great! For inspiration we looked to Cassie Stephens new book Clay Lab for Kids! I can not express how much I love this book and her adorable ideas!!
Texture Fish Air Dry Clay ProjectTexture Clay Fish
Supplies: Crayola Air Dry Clay, Various Textures to imprint on the clay (doilies, texture rollers, or create your own texture plates, etc), Crayola tempera paint, paint brushes, toothbrushes (for score & slip)
Preparation:
Place 3 balls of clay in 3 different sizes in a zip-lock back to give to each student. Set up tables with either canvas boards or newsprint, small rolling pin (optional), a water cup, toothbrush and needle tool.
Tip: Spray the texture plates & rollers with Pam Pan spray to help the clay to not stick!
We followed the instructions in the Clay Lab book with the exception of using air dry clay instead of salt dough. Here are some pictures from the project. After the fish were dry, we used tempera paint and the dry brush technique to color the fish sculptures. The dry brush really accented the texture!

Supplies: Crayola Model Magic (white), Various Textures to imprint on the clay (Learning Leaves Rubbing Plates, Architectural texture plates, etc), Crayola tempera paint, paint brushes
Preparation:
Divide model magic into 3 equal pieces (1 per student). Cut the divided piece into 3 smaller pieces. Place 3 balls of model magic in a zip-lock back to give to each student. Set up tables with newsprint, small rolling pin (optional), and needle tool
