What is THIS Art Teacher Doing Over Summer Break??

I LOVE summer break-let’s be honest as a teacher you get paid and don’t have to be at school (most of the time). Don’t get me wrong, I didn’t say that we don’t work over the summer! So what have you been doing over your summer? I’d love to know-leave a comment!

My summer started at the end of May and I return August 5th for in-service, sadly not all of the projects I had hoped to get done this summer aren’t going to happen. The good news is that the major “To Do’s” are getting done.

So this is what I have been up to…

In my Studio Creating Art

I am part of the “Oasis” Exhibit at the Open Doors Gallery at HCBC Austin. The first month of June I spent creating art for this exhibit (White Orchids) and am currently working on another piece for another exhibit going up in August (Amaryllis facing the light).

Volunteering at Church

I helped create the stage for the Xtreme Adventure Camp (like VBS on steroids for 4-6th graders) this year, we have a very short amount of time to put it all together but it came out well-the kids especially liked the life-size Spiderman shooting webs. My kids, husband & I also helped out with the “Backyard Bible Clubs” (like VBS, but at people’s homes-we had 55 homes this year!). My older kids helped lead the clubs, husband shot video of all the clubs.

Continuing Education

Now I taking a class through the Art of Ed & I am SO impressed with the level of instruction! I wish I had found this a long time ago-I would be such a stronger teacher!! The class I’m currently taking is Designing Your Own Curriculum. I will DEFINITELY be taking more classes here!

Changing Classrooms

So after 12 years, my school is giving me a new classroom- I”M SO EXCITED!!! My old room was an odd shape & could not fit many students very easily. The room size/shape limited the kinds of projects we could do. Now I have LOTS of room & we are even getting a throwing wheel-AHHH!!!! I will post again after I have the room set up 🙂

Needles to say, this has been an incredibly busy summer so far and it’s just going to get busier as I start preparing to go back in a few weeks!
