India ink is an excellent material to explore value and contrast, and this india ink skull is a winner with my students! Try out this spooky subject matter using a skull photograph as a reference. We will look at value mapping, painting ink with a brush and add splatters for a fun accent.
India Ink Technique Practice
Most of my students have no experience with india ink. We start any ink unit by creating a five to seven step value scale. This will help students learn to control the brush and the values of their ink. I cut small pieces of Bristol for them to practice with.
This tutorial is great for review and for absent students. I have also found that showing clips of each step before we embark on it together in class makes for a much smoother demo day.
Skull Reference Images
Students could photograph their own skull or use my pre-made copyright free reference images. Feel free to use these at home or in your own classroom.

This india ink skull tutorial will walk you through every step. I use it to review steps, for absent students and I put it in my Canvas page so students can access it at their own convenience. Feel free to use it at home or in your own classroom.
